TIPS FOR SELLING A CARWhether you sell your car, give it away or even dump a registered vehicle to the local tip, you are legally obliged to transfer or cancel the registration within a prescribed period by contacting your local motor registration authority. Statutory requirements applying to both the seller ('the current owner') and the acquirer ('the buyer'), vary from State to State around Australia. Specific information can be found on the websites of the various State licensing bodies. See "Selling Privately" for more information. This is probably the easiest way of disposing of a used car as the dealer does most of the work in arranging transfers, paying the relevant fees, and arranging for roadworthiness or safety inspections. The charges for selling your vehicle vary from company to company and from State to State. Shop around is the best advice. You will usually get more for your vehicle by selling it privately, but you will also have to do a lot more work for your money. Do your homework first by looking up representative prices of similar models advertised on this site or by purchasing a copy of your local Trading Post publication. |
